Therapeutic Counseling Services
At KPLA, the therapeutic process starts with a Free Phone Consultation with Marian Curtis, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), who will listen to you and address your concerns. She will help guide you to the appropriate KPLA professional, who can best provide the appropriate counseling service for your unique needs.

There are many times in a child, adolescent or adult’s life when individual therapy can be beneficial. For individuals who struggle with neurobehavioral disorders (ADHD, LD, Bipolar, etc.) individual treatment can be helpful in assisting individuals to gain a greater understanding of themselves and also provide insight into their unique life challenges.
Individual therapy can provide support and teach coping skills to family members who have children who are experiencing such neurological disorders. We also offer home-based therapy and post high school coaching/mentoring which provides extra support for families and individuals. The associates at KPLA routinely see clients experiencing:
- Anger Issues
Parenting and family dynamics can be stressful and upset the family system causing unique challenges for everyone involved. For families who have children experiencing Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), ADHD, Learning Disabilities, Mood Disorders, Depression, and Anxiety, this can be especially true. Families also seek support during times of divorce, trauma, and grief.
At KPLA, our family therapy services include parent coaching, marital therapy, and family therapy. Family Counseling allows for healing for the entire family structure.
KPLA has designed home-based services for families who desire an accelerated path to resolving unique challenges in the home environment. This service is particularly helpful for families whose children’s behavior has become disruptive causing a family imbalance and overall frustration. This service consists of having in-home, intensive coaching and therapy with a KPLA professional, who will help families create strategies, instill positive behaviors, reduce power struggles and decrease and address conflict in the home. We work together with your family’s specific needs to successfully implement these positive changes and restore family harmony. Some of the issues that we address during this time are:
- Discipline/Following Instruction
- Positive Communication and dealing with frustration
- Implementing Routines (Morning, Dinner and Bedtime)
- Homework and Chores
- Productive Parenting
Creating a partnership with your child’s school is a great way to support your child’s learning. From the interpretation of psycho-educational testing to the implementation of an Individual Education Plan (IEP) or 504 Plan, KPLA professionals can assist you with this important home/school communication. Connecting the student, family, and school can help with the use of accommodations at home and at school. Though many school consultations occur organically as part of family or individual therapy with a child, KPLA is also available for consultation as a unique service. Post High School Coaching
Post high school coaching and support is for young adults needing structural guidance and emotional support to become engaged in their own process for the future and to be motivated towards a successful adult life. During this coaching and support, Mike Villarreal, MA, LPC, works with clients to set goals while also identifying social, emotional and/or cognitive obstacles keeping clients from achieving success. This specialized coaching/counseling is specifically for the young adult who struggles to launch themselves or move positively towards adult independence.
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), a therapeutic approach used in the treatment of PTSD and trauma. EMDR uses bilateral stimulation of the brain, such as tapping or eye movement, to help the brain reprocess disturbing thoughts and memories, so they are less upsetting. EMDR can be used in the treatment of post-traumatic stress, anxiety disorder, complicated grief, disturbing memories, stress reduction, and sexual and /or physical abuse. EMDR also helps to change and desensitize negative thoughts and to instill positive beliefs about one’s self. Scientific research has shown that EMDR is effective for post-traumatic stress and the results are long-lasting.
